Rock Farm

A Laid Back Farm in North Central Florida

In our free time, if we're not on the St.John's River you can usually find us at the beaches and marshes around Matanzas Inlet. We love it there and spend our time swimming, cast netting for mullet, fishing and catching blue crabs and stone crabs ( both of which Sue loves and has got good at catching). Below are some photos of some of our catch.

Bridge Mullet Netting

I finally got up the nerve to try casting my 9 foot mullet net on schools of mullet that pass under the bridge at the Matanzas Inlet. It can be quite a task for a number of reasons. First, the water is around 25 feet below the bridge and you are trying to hit a fast moving school of mullet that can often see it coming. Second is the current, when the current gets to moving through the Inlet it makes pulling in your net a real challenge. You have to start hauling it in just after it hits the water and try to get the net out of the water before the current drags it under the bridge and the net rope against the bridge wall. If it does that it can be very hard to pull up, especially when you have 15 or more mullet in the net. Below are some pictures of me and a guy I work with catching some nice mullet. The limit is 50 per person per day and I've limited out several times and that is with Sue and Becky culling out all but the biggest ones.
